For individualized, intensive cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) training, Beck Institute offers supervision programs for mental health professionals worldwide geared towards certification in CBT*. Since 1982, Beck Institute supervision programs have trained hundreds of clinicians across the entire spectrum of mental health providers. Regardless of your experience with CBT, these programs are designed to deepen your understanding and enhance your skills.
Supervision programs are available for:
- Individuals
- Groups
How Beck Institute supervision works
Beck Institute supervision is available telephonically to participants anywhere in the world. Participants send a 45-minute audiotape or CD of a psychotherapy session to their Beck Institute supervisor for review. (Community mental health participants may not be required to provide taped sessions, although it is beneficial to do so.) Then, in a telephone session, the supervisor provides feedback at a level appropriate to the participant’s experience. Supervision is available for mental health professionals at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of expertise, including residency supervisors. Participants can choose individual supervision, or groups of up to four from an organization can participate together. Participants may opt for 23 or 46 sessions, with telephonic supervision sessions weekly or every other week.
Depending on the participants’ level of experience, supervision addresses:
- Conceptualizing patients according to a cognitive formulation
- Planning treatment
- Strategies for meeting therapeutic goals
- Monitoring and measuring patient progress
- Combining CT and psychopharmacology
- Presenting to residents
- Supervising residents
- Tailoring CT training for the participant’s institution
- Using the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale to assess therapist’s skill
Applying for CBT supervision
New supervision terms begin on the first of each month. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must hold at least a master’s degree in a mental health, medical or related field (bachelor’s degree for community mental health participants), and have attended a Level I workshop. Supervision programs are conducted under the direction of Aaron T. Beck, M.D., and Judith S. Beck, Ph.D. Supervisors are highly experienced in treating a variety of disorders—including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and many others—in adult and adolescent populations. If you work primarily with a specific population, e.g. eating disorders, substance abuse, etc., please let us know on your application. Having this information will help us make the best match possible between you and your supervisor.
