Dr. Aaron Beck conducts a roleplay at the May 2010 Extramural Workshop

MAY/2010: (Left) Dr. Aaron Beck conducts a roleplay with Extramural participant Dr. William Lamb, a psychologist from the San Francisco VA Medical Center. The workshop was attended by psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, professors, physicians, post-doctoral fellows, and other professionals. Participants traveled from Australia, Canada, China, Greece, Japan, the United Kingdom, and nine U.S. states. The Extramural Training program provides intensive, one-on-one supervision to professionals seeking to enhance their clinical skills in Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Professional training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy was provided by Beck Institute faculty members Aaron T. Beck, M.D., Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., Leslie Sokol, Ph.D., Norman Cotterell, Ph.D., and Cory F. Newman, Ph.D. Guest lecturers were John Williams, M.D., and Beck Institute Scholars Rachel Handley, Ph.D., and Melissa Magaro, Ph.D.

The workshop was attended by psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, professors, physicians, nurses practitioners, post-doctoral fellows, and other professionals. Participants traveled from Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and twelve U.S. states. The Extramural Training program provides intensive, one-on-one supervision to professionals seeking to enhance their clinical Cognitive Behavior Therapy skills.

Nervous Extramural Trainees

We are holding a two-day workshop for our extramural trainees today and tomorrow. Many new mental health professionals are just starting the program and will be sending an audiotape or CD of a therapy session to their supervisor next week. As usual, at least several are having automatic thoughts about sending the recordings—they’re nervous about what their supervisor will think. I gave them an analogy. If they were starting tennis lessons, the tennis pro wouldn’t care if they were novice, intermediate, or advanced players. He or she would just hope to advance them from where they’re starting. I hope this allayed their anxiety! We don’t have expectations of where any of our trainees start. We just hope we’ll be able to improve their proficiency.

Participants traveled from Canada, Ireland, Mexico, Russia, United Kingdom, and twelve U.S. states. 

(Right) Dr. Judith Beck conducts a roleplay with trainee Matt Miller, LCSW, a clinical social worker based in New Jersey and Connecticut in private practice and a community mental health center. The Extramural Training program provides intensive, one-on-one supervision to professionals seeking to enhance their clinical Cognitive Therapy skills.

Participants traveled from Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, United Kingdom, and nine U.S. states. They received professional training in Cognitive Therapy from Aaron T. Beck, M.D., Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., Leslie Sokol, Ph.D., and Cory F. Newman, Ph.D.
